News From the Blog

Getting there slowly…

It has been a busy week, and slowly the basic foundation for the site is being laid.. Not an easy task for one person, but it will get easier and more manageable when we have the foundation set and other people can try their hand at expanding on the core concepts we brainstormed over at the SBG forums..

In the meantime, here is a quick run down of what is new (again, mostly just for my own purposes so I can have a record of what was done when and what is to be done before we can go to Beta 0.1)..

First off, because there were so many things not even on last posts to do list (and as things keep on evolving over on the forums) I had to change direction several times so have only added two more nation ‘fact sheets’ bringing the total nation listings up to date as below.

LANDS OF ELATREUS

On the Swords, the Castir has been added – leaving only the Vorpal sword (of which the designer, who has written short stories in the past, is working on the backstory now) and the sword of Danu.

Additionally, I also started a timeline – from year zero (creation) to the ‘present day’ 1030 years after the Empire was founded. This timeline is critical at this point to ensure internal cohesion of dates, events, etc – one of the core rules of this site is that, once we get out of beta, NOTHING can be CHANGED, only added to. This way, we can build a sprawling site with an absolute treasure trove of information that all ties in neatly. If we change one thing, who knows what kind of ‘butterfly effect’ that might have.. (Might be enough to bring back the DeathKnight).

Speaking of which, I also added a new antagonist to the world – a sinister figure that some think may be the next DeathKnight in waiting.. Read it yourself and see if you think it is true, or if the Empire is so nervous of another DeathKnight popping up that he is nothing more than a bogeyman..

In addition to these updates, there is also some very rough and ready draft rules of a simple pen and paper RPG system you can use to live firsthand the dangers and the rewards of the lands of Elatrues.

And then, an exercise in pure imagination..

The Bestiary – Click to see the monsters!

The Bestiary is amazingly good fun to put together – and the best part is, this is NOT a rehash of the same old monsters you have seen in RPGs like D&D, Pathfinder, etc. Sure, the names might be the same sometimes, but if you are used to ‘run of the mill’ monsters, then the Bestiary should be a pleasant surprise..

My favorite entry so far? Out of my own creations, probably the Forest Troll (shown in the pic above) but the Ice Serpents and the ‘gives amazing flavor to the world’ Medusozua Zeppelinus (giant floating sky jellyfish) is a game changer when you hook the things up to a basket or even a ship..

Otherwise, the bulk of my time has been spent making illustrations with Photoshop and securing the rights to appropriate artwork, of which there is a LOT so far and even more planned (though many are just ‘placeholders’ until we can commission some REAL artists to bring the basic concepts to life).

One of my favorite resources is a free source of copyright free images you can use in projects like this called Pixabay.com

My combining images in Photoshop I was able to make the placeholder images for various locations and all the monsters (though some are collages of various body parts and animals, etc)

Here are some of the illustrations I have created that I like the most..

The Capital of the Aelutian Empire, Paragonia

Was made combining two images – the wall and the city, with the city moved around a bit to look big.

Escian Warrior Practicing with Castir

This one was made using one of many transparant background characters, editing a Castir into his hands and adding a glint of sunlight to the blade. Total time to make, around 10 mins..

Tough Frontiersman in Northern Stormwater

I just love the look of that little house – add a giant in there and you have the perfect representation of a Frontier settlement in Stormwater..

I know there is more, but since pretty much every waking hour is dedicated to this at the moment, I think it might be time to stop for today and be all fresh for another final push to get to the beta launch in around a weeks time..

So, talk to you all – oh wait, I forget.. I is pretty much just me at the moment.. So no need to sign off right! Yup, time to get some rest for a bit and dream up some new nightmarish monsters!

  1. Hello Paul,

Its not just you at the moment 🙂

I’m really liking the layout of this website. Love the Timeline and the individual pages for each sword and nation. But I’d like to put my $0.02 on this particular statement of yours:

“This timeline is critical at this point to ensure internal cohesion of dates, events, etc – one of the core rules of this site is that, once we get out of beta, NOTHING can be CHANGED, only added to. This way, we can build a sprawling site with an absolute treasure trove of information that all ties in neatly. If we change one thing, who knows what kind of ‘butterfly effect’ that might have.. (Might be enough to bring back the DeathKnight).”

I really don’t like the fact that we can’t change anything on the website once its out of beta. Instead, why don’t we have a team of editors and moderators that can choose whether or not some facet of the website can be edited if the writer of that particular page needed to edit their text? These editors and moderators can choose whether or not the proposed change to said page/article is allowed or rejected. Of course, the writer of the article needs to send the editor and moderator team their proposed changes and edits.

On another note, I’ve sent you two rather important emails about 24 hours ago containing my feedback on the timeline of events and Paragon’s story, among other things. I hope you can reply soon.

    • Hi Rayhan,

Lol, yes, I know you are around the place as well as Daniel Dacombe and a few more will be coming in ahead of the beta launch.

With regards to not changing the timeline, I will have to give this some additional thought, but IF we allow edits once the site is live and being fully built out, it could really mess things up for other people who are building on the existing stories and collapse the whole project. It also ties in with some other concepts to expand the site so for now, we can edit all we like while in Beta, but ‘if in doubt leave it out’ or make it vague so it can be filled out later.

Edits once we are live should either be impossible or done in such a way that they reveal a previous ‘truth’ as false or embellished. So it is ctitically impotant that once something is entered, it is entered with the view to keep it in there permanently..

I am not a Thane however (lol) so if a really compelling reason to change something comes up I will certainly consider it. But as a rule, like the real world, once something happens in Eletreus it cannot be undone..

      Email replies coming shortly.

      • Ah allright, I understand.

As I have also said in the emails I’ve sent you, I’d rather not have anything written regarding Temple Nimbus as permanent, which is also why I asked whether or not we can edit the timeline since I know you already have 2 images of a flying fortress that you might use. But since the images don’t really fit my story I added the option in the mail so that you can use the 2 royalty-free images and have Temple Nimbus be purely magical instead of Technology + Magic until I can get the services of a digital artist to create an image of the flying fortress that fits my story.

Also thanks for not mentioning any details regarding Temple Nimbus in anything permanent. I hope you’ll continue to do so.
